“BIOPOLYMERS: SOURCES, TRANSFORMATION, PRODUCTION AND INNOVATING APPLICATIONS"

Biopolymeric Materials Engineering (BIOPMAT) Is a project that circumscribes within the world trends denominated "Green Chemistry" and also within the one known as "Engineering for life". The term Biopolymers is used to describe a series of materials. They can be classified in two categories, mainly:

- Polymers produced by biological systems, such as microorganisms, plants and animals; and
- Polymers chemically synthesized but derived from initial biological materials, such as amino acids, sugars, natural lipids, or oils.

The biopolymeric materials are renewable, biodegradable and biocompatible, reason why their future and present applications are only limited by our imagination. Some applications are: adhesives, packages, adsorbents, lubricants, soil conditioners, cosmetics, fabrics, structural materials, computer information storage hardware, implants, etc. Because of it's multiple present and potential applications, the conference's nature claims for a transdisciplinary approach.

CONFERENCE'S MAIN GOAL: Attract individuals coming from the different elements or entities of the international innovation system: Higher Education Institutions, R&D centers and Companies interested or working on the biopolymers' field. This includes experts with a solid scientific trajectory, as well as the members of the new generation of engineers and scientists , in order to interact and exchange ideas and knowledge within the frame of the conference. Such interaction, and the products of it we are sure will be of benefit to their organizations and nations.

PARTICULAR GOAL: To build a platform to create and develop a Biopolymers Network (BIOPMAT) ; We expect to train a group of young researchers and engineers in the field with the assistance and expert advise of the members of this network . Of course, in return, we will commit to the Network general objectives and contribute to achieve them.

WHO IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND: Profesionals from : Industry, SME´s, Private and Public Higher Education Institutions, Public and Private R&D Centers, and from National Goverment Agencies and International Organisms related or interested in getting involved in the field.

Students from (not exclusive) the following undergraduate and graduate programs: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Industrial Engineering, Medicine (Odontology, Ophtalmology, etc.), Food Science and Engineering, Economics, Biology, Business Management, etc.
